Henry Allardyce Phipps is, at forty, retired from the Colonial Service. He is a bachelor of small independent means, but finds that he cannot settle down in his new-found leisure. The future looks surprisingly glum - until he meets Norma trying to get away from the police. To him, Norma is just like any other unfortunate girl, cheap and provocative, but there is something in the way she asks him to enlist the aid of Miss Mathieson, her probation officer known as 'Matty', that appeals to him. Matty is a young, not unattractive, woman. She finds Phipps cynical about her job until she challenges him that it is a worthwhile one and he decides, driven by the boredom of a comfortable but aimless existence, to have a go at it himself.
This unusual film, which stars an early appearance of a young Joan Collins was later developed into a Popular British TV series "Probation Officer" that ran between 1959 to 1962 with "John Paul" taking the "Cecil Parker" role and "Honor Blackman" of Pussy Galore fame" taking the "Celia Johnson" role.
