Starring
Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea and Robert Preston.
Loosely based on the story of the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad, with much artistic licence. The Union Pacific Railroad pushes on towards the wilderness to join with the Central Pacific railroad, which is coming out from California. But financial opportunist Asa Barrows hopes to profit from obstructing it. Chief troubleshooter Jeff Butler (Joel McCrea) has his hands full fighting Barrows' agent, gambler Sid Campeau (Brian Donlevy). Campeau's partner Dick Allen (Robert Preston) served alongside Jeff Butler (Joel McCrea) in the recent civil war. Both have their eyes on the engineer's daughter, Molly Monahan (Barbara Stanwyck).
