LaJoe Rivers and her family exist in a nightmare world ruled by crime where children kill each other to `prove' their worth, as members of rival street gangs. LaJoe's hard-drinking husband has abandoned her, an eldest son has already succumbed to life of crime. But for her two younger sons, Lafayette and Pharaoh, there is still hope and LaJoe is determined to teach them the difference between right and wrong. Her message is simple: even if you live in hell, you don't have to sell your soul to the devil.
