When Senator Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) returns home to Shinbone for the funeral of Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), he recounts to a local newspaper editor the story behind it all. He had come to town many years before, as a young lawyer. His stagecoach was robbed on its way into town, by the local outlaw, Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin) who gives him a severe beating. Stoddard is found and saved by Doniphon who takes him to Hallie his sweetheart (Vera Miles) to nurse back to health. Hallie works as a waitress in a local diner who take Stoddard in. Vowing to bring Liberty Valance to justice legally, while Valance continues to terrorise the town. Stoddard and Valance must finally confront each other. But who doe's shot Liberty Valance?
A brilliant performance is given by Edmond O'Brien as Dutton Peabody the local drunken newspaper editor.
