THE BARGEE
(1964)
Starring
Harry H. Corbett, Ronnie Barker, Eric Sykes and Julia Foster.
Harry H. Corbett, best known for the iconic British sitcom "Steptoe and Son", written by Galton and Simpson, who also wrote the script for this film.
The 1964 British comedy film The Bargee follows the misadventures of Hemel Pike, a charmingly roguish Bargee who plies the canals of England. Hemel is a self-proclaimed ladies' man, notorious for his womanizing ways at every lock and pub along his route. His carefree bachelor life is complicated when he meets Nellie, a more sensible and independent woman who works on another barge.
Despite his initial reluctance to settle down, Hemel finds himself increasingly drawn to Nellie, leading to a comedic push-and-pull as he tries to balance his ingrained philandering habits with his growing affection for her. The film offers a humorous look at life on the canals, the close-knit community of bargees, and Hemel's eventual, if reluctant, journey towards commitment.
