THE ART of LOVE
(1965)
Stars,
Dick Van Dyke, James Garner, Elke Sommer and Angie Dickinson.
In The Art of Love, Paul Sloane (Dick Van Dyke) is a struggling American artist living in Paris, constantly overshadowed by his more successful and charismatic best friend, Casey Barnett (James Garner). When Paul stages his own "death" in a spectacular car crash, hoping to boost the value and demand for his artwork, the scheme initially works brilliantly. His paintings skyrocket in price, and he becomes a posthumous sensation.
However, the deception quickly spirals out of control. Paul, now living in hiding and disguised, finds it increasingly difficult to maintain the ruse, especially when his "widow," the beautiful and shrewd Michele (Elke Sommer), begins to enjoy the lavish lifestyle his supposed death has afforded her. Meanwhile, Casey, unwittingly benefiting from his friend's "tragedy," finds himself embroiled in the escalating chaos, navigating suspicious police detectives and Michele's growing affections. As the lies mount and the pressure builds, Paul must find a way to "resurrect" himself without exposing the elaborate fraud, leading to a series of hilarious misunderstandings and desperate attempts to reclaim his life and his love.
