NCS MANHUNT
Starring
David Suchet, Melanie Hill, Keith Barron & Daniel Mays.
In the early 2000s, David Suchet briefly stepped away from the refined world of Hercule Poirot to star in "NCS: Manhunt", a gritty, fast-paced police procedural that followed the elite (and now-defunct) National Crime Squad.
Series Synopsis
The show centers on DI John Borne (David Suchet), a complex, enigmatic, and highly focused detective within the National Crime Squad (NCS). Unlike local police forces, the NCS was tasked with dismantling organized crime, high-stakes drug trafficking, and international conspiracies.
The Pilot (2001): The series began with a two-part special where Borne’s team investigates the kidnapping of a senior officer’s mother. What starts as a localized crime quickly spirals into a massive conspiracy involving a notorious criminal named Ricky Valesi (played by Kenneth Cranham).
Series 1 (2002): The six-episode follow-up sees the team tackling racially motivated violence in Birmingham, contract killers on scooters, and Colombian drug cartels.
Borne is portrayed as a man who "uses language sparingly," often relying on intuition and a deep, quiet intensity to out manoeuvre the most dangerous criminals in Britain.
Why only one series was made?
Despite David Suchet’s star power and respectable viewing figures (the pilot drew over 7 million viewers), "NCS: Manhunt" was never commissioned for a second series. There were three primary reasons for its sudden end:
High Production Costs: The show was filmed on film (rather than cheaper digital or video formats of the time) and featured high-octane action sequences, location shoots across the UK, and a large ensemble cast including Samantha Bond and Phyllis Logan. The BBC found the cost-to-viewer ratio difficult to justify for a second run.
David Suchet's Availability: Suchet was in high demand, particularly for more Poirot films and West End theatre. Without a definitive "green light" immediately following the first series, the lead actor’s schedule filled up, making it logistically difficult to reunite the cast.
