Life has been tough for the five Cain children. Their mother Callie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is mentally unstable. They have no father. And when Callie is finally committed to an institution, it looks like the end. But they are fostered by a childless couple, Patty Pepper (Sally Struthers) and her husband, who welcome the children into their home and soon grow to love them as their own. For the first time in their lives the children experience the warmth and stability of a caring family. They blossom and their emotional scars heal as they learn to return the love of their foster parents. Then Callie, who is still unstable, decides she wants them back. The children's lives are in danger of being torn apart as they are caught up in a desperate tug of war between the mother they have learned to fear and the foster parents they have grown to love.
