"Band of Angels" is a 1957 American psychological drama set in the antebellum South and during the American Civil War, starring Clark Gable, Yvonne De Carlo, and Sidney Poitier.
The film tells the story of Amantha Starr (Yvonne De Carlo), a privileged young woman from a Kentucky plantation. Her comfortable life is shattered upon her father's death when she discovers a shocking secret: her deceased mother was actually one of her father's Black slaves, making Amantha legally property. She is then taken to New Orleans to be sold at auction.
At the auction, Amantha is purchased by the enigmatic and wealthy planter Hamish Bond (Clark Gable). To her surprise, Hamish treats her not as a slave, but as a lady, fostering a complex relationship between them. Despite her initial resentment, Amantha finds herself drawn to Hamish.
Adding to the dynamic is Rau-Ru (Sidney Poitier), one of Hamish's educated and trusted slaves, who harbors deep resentment for his servitude, despite Hamish's kindness.
As the Civil War breaks out, their lives are further upended. Hamish reveals a dark past as a former slave trader, a revelation that deeply disturbs Amantha. The war brings Union soldiers to New Orleans, including Lieutenant Ethan Sears, who becomes interested in Amantha.
