King of Hearts (1966) is a whimsical French anti-war film starring Alan Bates as Private Charles Plumpick, a Scottish soldier in World War I. Sent to disarm a bomb in a deserted French town, Plumpick finds the local asylum has been abandoned, its gates left open. The eccentric patients, mistaking him for the "King of Hearts," are convinced the war is a grand, elaborate game and enthusiastically crown him their monarch.
As Plumpick tries to complete his mission, he becomes increasingly entangled in the delightfully absurd world of the asylum's inhabitants. They are a charming, often profound group who, despite their perceived madness, seem to possess a greater understanding of humanity and joy than the "sane" world at war outside. The film explores themes of sanity versus insanity, the absurdity of war, and the search for peace and happiness in chaotic times. Plumpick finds himself torn between his duty as a soldier and the profound, liberating freedom offered by his new, unusual subjects.
