Desperate to flee their impoverished homeland, a group of Cuban citizens embark on a perilous ocean journey to the United States. Risking it all aboard a dilapidated boat, the scared and desperate refugees, including five-year-old Elián Gonzáles and his mother, are ill prepared for what lies ahead, and they are soon engulfed in a violent storm whose howling winds and turbulent seas show no mercy.
Elián is found clinging to a rubber tube by fisherman off the coast of Miami. Florida, after being adrift for more than two days. Immediately rushed to a U.S. hospital, Elián is soon identified as the only son of Juan Miguel Gonzáles, a loyal Cuban who was unaware of his ex-wife’s risky defection plans. Placed in the temporary custody of his great-uncle in Miami, who vows never to return Elián to Cuba the young boy soon becomes the centre of an international media and political frenzy. Supported by attorneys and activists, Lazaro fights to seek permanent custody of Elián. But Elián devoted father, backed by the Cuban nation, demands the return of his beloved son.
Challenging the bond between a father and son, and the laws of two nations, this is the story that touched the hearts and minds of millions and made us all explore the true meaning of freedom.
